To choose a wedding dress for your wedding day is an important decision and today the market offers a number of amazing dresses to choose from. In 2018 more and more brides are searching for a good quality wedding dress for their wedding day. Journalist Anna Williams has interviewed Kristian at Victoria & Vincent who answers some of the most important questions regarding the subject.
VICTORIA & VINCENT DRESSES ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR HIGH QUALITY. WHAT FACTORS AFFECT THE QUALITY OF A WEDDING DRESS?
- “High-end dresses” are manufactured by a small group of very exclusive manufacturers and brands compete to become their customer. Each high-end dress uses good materials and requi¬res tens of hours to make. Their fit is far superior to the other groups. Prices range is usually from 1100€ to 4000€.
- “Medium quality dresses” usually have fairly good materials but they have been designed to be much more simple with fewer cuts and fewer details. The simplified design hurts their fit but also allows them to be manufactured quick and cheap. Prices are usually from 400€ to 1100€.
- “Low quality dresses” are often sold only online as wedding dress shops won’t do business with these companies. There are many issues with this category including poor quality, poor fit and poor human rights for the workers. Their prices range from 100€ to 400€.
HOW DOES A BUYER RECOGNIZE A GOOD QUALITY DRESS?
There are two main details that are important to understand; the fit and the material quality. We’ll start with the most important detail of all: the fit. The fit is also the part that most people don’t understand and where the biggest mistakes are made. Here’s a common misconception; if your measurements are for example: Chest 100cm, Waist 90cm, Hips 110cm You might think that by changing measurements of any wedding dress to 100-90-110 you achieve a good fit. That is not correct!
The fit of a wedding dress is much more complex than people realize. An evening dress might be one or two layers of fabric with a simple cut. A high-end wedding dress will have multiple layers of fabric with complex cuts, seams and support “bones”.
The second thing to pay attention to is material quality. Some signs of a poor quality dress are:
• The color is too white (or in worst cases yellowish).
• The fabric is slightly shiny.
• The dress lacks details.
• Materials are stiffer and won’t move as naturally.
• Support “bones” are missing or visible through the fabric.
Victoria & Vincent dress Hilma has for example 5 layers of fabric, 9 vertical support bones and so many shape cuts we couldn’t count them; all invisible on the surface. The purpose of these is to make sure you look better on your wedding day than you have ever looked before in any clothing.
